Hiking the Peaks of the Balkans: A Journey Through Three Stunning Countries

Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure through the majestic Peaks of the Balkans, a unique hiking trail that spans three countries—Albania, Montenegro, and Kosovo. This trail offers a true escape into nature, combining rugged landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and breathtaking vistas.

Albania: The Land of Rugged Beauty Begin your journey in Albania, where the wild beauty of the Accursed Mountains awaits. Explore untouched valleys in Theth and Valbona, dramatic cliffs, and crystal-clear lakes while experiencing the hospitality of remote mountain villages. As you hike, you’ll be surrounded by a sense of tranquility and adventure, as well as the stunning views of the Albanian Alps that make this region so iconic.

Montenegro: A Landscape of Majestic Peaks Cross into Montenegro, where the landscapes shift dramatically. From the lush green hills to the towering peaks of the  Mount Trekufiri (2366 m). Montenegro. The peaks are
reflected in the Hrid mountain lake and you can enjoy a swim at over 1900 m. The route goes downhill through dense pine forest to the town of Babinopolje where we will get the transportation to go in Plav. The dramatic views, alpine meadows, and pristine rivers make it one of the most scenic parts of the entire journey. In addition to natural beauty, you’ll encounter traditional Montenegrin villages, where life seems untouched by time.

Kosovo: The Heart of the Balkans Experience a trek in Kosovo, where history and nature blend seamlessly. As you trek through the Gjeravica Peak, you’ll experience some of the region’s most remote and untouched landscapes. Kosovo’s rich cultural heritage is evident in its monasteries and villages, and the hospitality of the people makes this final leg of the journey unforgettable.

Itinerary

This day we will meet early in the morning to head to Thethi village where on our way we will have a short stop in Shkodra. After Shkodra we will have lunch in QafeThore to enjoy traditional local dishes and amazing view. Later we will head for the guesthouse in Thethi for accommodation and meet with the tour leader to explore Thethi. Stop in Shkodra Castle and visiting the promenade of the city. Visiting the church and the Lock-in Tower of Theth for a better understanding of the north Albanian culture and tradition. Learn what is Kanuni of Leke Dukagjini and how people managed to live there with their rules and morals.

After breakfast with local products we will prepare our packed lunch to head for the hike. The evening will be free to explore the village by yourself and enjoy the views of Thethi. During our hike we will first visit Grunas Waterfall and continue to walk near the river bed that will lead us to the hidden gem, ‘Blue Eye Thethi’. Explore the flora and fauna that the forest has to offer. Be ready to swim if you don’t mind the crystal cold water.

This day, after an early breakfast and a packed lunch, we will have a village pass, which is considered one of the most beautiful sceneries of Albania with big slopes and wild forests that goes down to Valbona valley. After the pass, we will accommodate in our guesthouse at Valbona and have our dinner with local dishes. Before starting our hike we will prepare our big bags and leave them at the guesthouse, mules will be includedto transport our bags to Valbona. During the hike we will need only our daily pack.

A short drive takes you to Cerem. From here you hike across mountain flower meadows towards the border triangle. On the alpine pastures you will meet numerous shepherds and take a break with coffee and raki. Time seems frozen here. In the simple shepherd’s hut comfort is not in it’s best, but you are offered plenty of warm hospitality, stories and culinary delights.

You can climb Kosovo’s highest peak or simply enjoy the day on a plateau above the tree line with shepherds, goats, sheep and cows. Today we climb from Albania to the highest mountain in Kosovo, Gjeravica (2,656m). Passing the Gjeravica lakes, we reach the summit from where we can see Kosovo. The peculiarity of this trail are the glacial lakes in which the Triton salamander lives, whose existence confirms the purity of the water. If you are brave enough be prepared to dip in the beautiful glacial lakes.

From the mountain village we climb up to Mount Trekufiri (2366 m). At the summit, the borders of three countries merge and you can enjoy the wide view of the surrounding area. A magical border path covered in blueberries leads to Montenegro. The peaks are reflected in the Hrid mountain lake and you can enjoy a swim at over 1900 m. The route goes downhill through dense pine forest to the town of Babinopolje where we will get the transportation to go in Plav.

A transfer takes you to the Grbaja Valley, one of the most impressive valleys in the Balkans. After an hour of transfer through picturesque landscapes you reach the canyon-like valley.  A steep climb takes you to the double peaks of Popadija and Taljanka (2056 m). The route returns along some spectacular viewpoints.

Last day early in the morning we will get ready to go back to Tirana, but not finished yet with the beautiful scenery and panoramas.  

  • Take the boat trip at Koman Lake (also known as Albanian Thailand) surrounded by the ever chaning scale of dramatic mountain gorges that reflet in the calm water’s surface.
  • Taking a camera to capture all the magnificent views is also essential.
  • Enjoy our last lunch in what Is considered the best traditional agro-tourism restaurant in Albania located in Fishte Village.
